About RISP
Since 1977, the Residential Information Systems Project (RISP) has gathered, maintained, and analyzed longitudinal data on Medicaid funded long-term supports and services (LTSS) for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).
Specifically, the RISP team:
- Gathers and maintains annual statistics and longitudinal trend data on Medicaid, state, and locally funded residential and in-home support.
- Conducts an annual survey of public residential facilities (PRF) describing status of the facility and the characteristics of people living there.
- Conducts literature reviews, case studies, state level policy studies, and secondary analyses of existing data sets to answer key policy and program questions about residential and community supports.
- Provides ongoing assistance to individuals, government agencies, public and private organizations, media outlets and others on residential and community supports for people with IDD.
- Publishes annual reports and monthly updates on the status and trends in residential and community living supports.
A Project of National Significance
The Residential Information Systems Project is one of three Longitudinal Data Projects of National Significance funded by the Administration on Community Living that gather and report information about supports and services for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The other projects include:
StateData.info is a project of ThinkWork! at the Institute for Community Inclusion at UMass Boston. StateData and ThinkWork! describe employment experiences of people with ID/DD and other disabilities, describe policies and supports that lead to employment and other meaningful day activities, and tell personal stories about employment success.
The State of the States in Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Project is run by the University of Kansas. It studies 1) how much money is spent on supports for people with ID/DD, 2) how services are funded, and 3) how technology changes people’s lives. State of the States data are used in the Expenditures and Technology chapters. National Association of State Directors of Developmental Disabilities Services is a project partner.

Funding
RISP is a longitudinal data project of national significance funded through a cooperative agreement from the Administration on Community Living , U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Cooperative Agreement #90DNPA0006 with supplemental funding from the National Institutes on Disability, Independent Living and Rehabilitation Research Grant #90RTCP0011. Grantees undertaking projects under government sponsorship are encouraged to express freely their findings and conclusions.
